Who We Are

Our Vision

A nurturing place where young children of the Bronx are valued and empowered through quality education.

Our Mission

Creating community through learning.

La Escuela Comunitaria del Bronx (ECB) is a community-based, dual language, tuition-free private preschool. We nurture the development of the whole child and cultivate a safe and stimulating environment that celebrates identity, promotes curiosity, and empowers children along their journey of lifelong learning.

Our School Principles

  • We respect children as competent and curious young people. Our educational approach lays a foundation for lifelong learning through the thoughtful facilitation of trained teachers who cultivate an engaging space for young children to explore the world around them in hands-on ways. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed by experts in early childhood development, bringing together proven effective approaches to learning.

We cultivate a space for play—understanding that play is a critical part of a child’s unique development. Play and learning are closely intertwined, where play promotes social-emotional development, allows creativity to blossom, encourages critical thinking, and creates a safe space to explore one's own sense of self.

  • Our dual language emergent curriculum allows children to develop an understanding of both Spanish and English through exploration and discovery of the world around them. Our earliest learners are first immersed in Spanish, and as they grow physically and cognitively, we layer in a scaffolded approach to the English language.

A dual language education broadens a child’s world, allowing them to develop empathy and understanding for people from different cultures. Research shows us that multilingual individuals have increased executive functioning abilities—meaning that the brain of multilingual individuals can better focus in spite of distractions and effectively navigate across tasks. Multilingual children have demonstrated increased aptitude in both reading and writing, with a deeper understanding of how language works. Immersed in two languages, children can strengthen their connections to family and cultural identity, while building confidence as global citizens.

  • We are community-based—not just community-placed. ECB strives to be the heart of our neighborhood, actively listening and co-creating a space of support and value for our local Bronx community. Within our school we are an inclusive community, in which all children are welcomed and respected. We empower children to develop effective communication through listening and speaking, and collaboration with others.

As a growing school, we strive to first understand the needs of our community, and then build a foundation on which we can work together to meet those needs. We are committed to reflecting the diversity of our community through our students, our families, and our staff.

  • We embrace the entire family, knowing that the classroom is only a part of a child’s learning and development. We strive to support parents through thoughtful engagement and collaboration, providing education when helpful and access to community services as needed.

Because a child’s education extends beyond the school day, we partner with families in order to promote a culture of lifelong learning—one in which we are all learning together, both inside and outside of the school.

  • At La Escuela Comunitaria del Bronx, we welcome and celebrate all children from diverse backgrounds. We place the child at the center of their own learning, so that each child is provided with the resources and individual support that empowers them with a foundation for lifelong learning.

As a tuition-free private school, we are dedicated to providing equitable access to high quality early childhood education for the families of the Bronx.
